Secrets to Fantasy Football success ahead of the coming season

Fantasy football expert James Thomas reveals his top tips for success ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.

Many fans have already started creating their fantasy football teams for the upcoming 2016/17 Premier League season. Just in case you haven’t done that yet, simply click here

However, with such a tight budget and so many difficult choices to make, we asked a fantasy football champion his views on the decisions many managers are faced with when creating their new teams.

The Euro Championships 2016 competition winner James Thomas shares his insights and explains why he is very enthusiastic about the new coming season. The interview follows:

Q. What formation will you go with for the 16/17 season?
A. My favourite formation for the new coming season would be 3-4-3, just because I prefer attacking players. After poor performances in front of goal at the Euros, I admit I am looking forward to seeing more goals in the opening Premier League weekend.

Q. Your goalkeeper, who would it be, Joe Hart or Petr Cech…?
A. I will selected Petr Cech as my preferred choice [£6.3m] – kinda cheap – I choose the Czech international for the reason that I had him as my first choice in 2015-16 and he was such a good goalkeeper then and a good shot-stopper. Wasting a lot of money on goalkeepers is not advisable, so selecting someone who will be confident to do a job for the entire season is advisable.

Q. DEFENDER – Nacho Monreal or Kyle Walker?
A. I think I will go with Kyle Walker [£6.3m] because he offers more going forward – and also think about all the assists he’s made. Moreover, Spurs’ first 5 games are much kinder than Arsenal’s.

Q. MIDFIELDER – Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez or Eden Hazard….A very tough decision.
A. This is very tough decision to make, but I will go for De Bruyne [£7.6m]. The Belgian footballer is brilliant. He’s creative, and he’s always in the right place at the right time. Under Pep Guardiola's gudiance this campaign, I think he’s going to have a great season.

Q. FORWARD – Sergio Aguero, Alexis Sanchez or Zlatan Ibrahimovic?
A. I will have to go with Aguero [£8.1m] as he is such a clinical finisher. However, that’s only if he can stay fit. He’ll be in my team for most of the season. Zlatan is tempting too, though.

Q. If you had to pick one player from the recently promoted sides, who would it be?
A. From the 3 promoted teams, I think that Jordan Rhodes will play well next season. It’s going to be a step up for him but look at what Deeney and Ighalo did last season.

Q. Who’s your captain for the first game week?
A. Aguero. Man City face Sunderland at home, so he should rack up plenty of points.

Q. How do you plan your transfers?
A. When I do transfers I normally think a week ahead to get the team prepared, making sure that I have at least one player in the first match of a new game week so I can use that player to transfer out after he’s played.

The Premier League kicks off on the 13 August and you have unlimited transfers until the first match kicks-off, which means you can keep tinkering and updating your team as many times as you want.
