3rd time lucky Lucas, as Neill helps Omiya reverse their plunge

Omiya Ardija have ended their dismal run of 8 J.League defeats in a row with a 1-0 victory over table-toppers Yokohama F. Marinos.

New signing Lucas Neill made his first start for the Squirrels, as they emerged victorious thanks to a late first-half goal from Daigo Watanabe.

Daniel Lane of The Age interviewed Neill recently, and it's clear the Aussie is determined to make a difference to Omiya's fortunes.

Having seen Neill train when he was a youngster, I can honestly say he's quite a perfectionist. Once, while training at Millwall, I heard him loudly cursing himself after he missed a chance on goal. It was a rare occurrence, as he was deadly in front of goal, despite being mostly deployed as a defender. As well as that, Neill had an almost perfect record from the spot in training. He always showed incredible desire and dedication and it was obvious he would go on to bigger and better things.

Then he was sold, all too cheaply by Millwall to Blackburn, where he showed his ability to play at a higher level.

I have no doubt he will achieve a lot with the Squirrels.
