Holtby: Tottenham Hotspur deserve Champions League football

Lewis Holtby believes Tottenham Hotspur belong in the UEFA Champions League.

Although Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League last season, they were denied entry to the premier club competition in Europe when Chelsea, who finished outside of the top four, took their place by winning the tournament in Munich. This ultimately cost Harry Redknapp his job, with Andre Villas-Boas now in charge.

Under the Portuguese coach Tottenham are again challenging for a top-four finish, and they are currently on target for such a standing with a four-point lead over rivals Arsenal. Holtby only joined the White Hart Lane club last month, but the German has seen enough to claim the club is geared up for the Champions League.

"The squad, the club, is getting bigger every time and we deserve to go into the Champions League," he told the Daily Star. "It's a long way and a very hard route, but I think with this squad, the whole background staff, everything is there."

Having been denied the chance to compete in the Champions League this term Spurs are challenging for the UEFA Europa League, where they take on Lyon in the last 32. The first leg of this mouth-watering tie will be played on Thursday, and although some supporters will be more interested in cementing that top-four place, Holtby believes they can also achieve glory in Europe.

"We can definitely win it. I think we have the team and squad to get that trophy,” added the 22-year-old former Schalke midfielder.
