Gerrard optimistic over Liverpool’s chances of top-four finish

Steven Gerrard believes Liverpool can finish in the top four this season.

The Reds have been without UEFA Champions League football for the past three years, and to reclaim their place in the top club competition in Europe is their aim for this campaign. After a rocky start, there have been signs of progress under Brendan Rodgers in recent weeks, raising optimism that a top-four finish is within their capability.

In particular, a 2-2 draw at champions Manchester City on Sunday impressed, with many pundits claiming it was their best performance of the season. And with Daniel Sturridge now alongside Luis Suarez in attack, Gerrard believes anything is possible.

"No disrespect to the sides we've got coming up but if we keep playing like that then we can certainly put in a challenge for fourth place,” he told Metro. "If we perform like that we will pick up a lot of points between now and the end of the season.

"The team is looking really strong at the moment. Before the transfer window we were lacking a bit up front as Luis Suarez was almost having to do two jobs. But now Daniel Sturridge has come in and given us more options going forward.”

With City and leaders Manchester United certain for the top two, the remaining two places will likely be contested by Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool. The latter are still nine points adrift of fourth place, with 13 games remaining.
