Ben Arfa to rock Newcastle United by asking for summer move

Hatem Ben Arfa could add to Newcastle United’s worries in the summer.

Everything seemed rosy at St James Park this time last season, when they were the surprise package of the Premier League and in the running for the final UEFA Champions League qualifying berth. This term, though, it is an entirely different scenario, with Alan Pardew’s side fighting to avoid being caught in a fight for survival.

A 0-0 draw at Norwich City on Saturday, whilst not a bad result, leaves them just two points above the relegation zone having won just twice in their last ten matches. The departure of top goalscorer Demba Ba, who joined Chelsea for £7million last week, has hardly helped, although Loic Remy looks set to join from Marseille in a £10million deal.

Pardew has also been rocked by Fabricio Coloccini asking to leave the club, with the captain revealing he wants to return to his native Argentina this month for personal reasons. And now Ben Arfa has indicated that he dreams of returning to France to play for Paris St Germain, although he has no plans to achieve this until the summer at the earliest.

"I am under contract with Newcastle and I'm fine," he told Le Parisien. "First, I must save my club. I only think of that. Help my team and my coach, with whom I get along great. We really want to fight for him. The fans are great too.

“Once we have saved the club, you never know. To sign for PSG would be a childhood dream. If there is a proposal, I will study it with interest. If there is a proposal. The 'if' is important. PSG still lives in my heart. Playing there would be a wonderful gift."

Formerly of Lyon and Marseille, Ben Arfa has become a key member of the Magpies side in recent times. His absence with a hamstring injury – he is not expected to be back in action for another month – has doubtless had an impact on their recent poor run of form.
