Demba Ba happy to flirt with idea of joining Arsenal in January

Demba Ba admits a move to Arsenal appeals to him.

A 5-2 win at Reading has once more catapulted the Gunners into contention for another top-four finish, but Arsene Wenger knows he needs to bolster his squad in the New Year. Robin van Persie, who left for Manchester United in the summer, has still to be replaced, despite the additions of Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski.

The French coach is keen to sign a trusted Premier League goalscorer during the winter, and he has been heavily linked with Ba. The Senegal international notched 16 goals in 34 matches for Newcastle United last season, a tally he looks certain to surpass this term having already bagged 11 in half as many appearances.

Ordinarily there would be little chance of the Magpies selling the 27-yaer-old, particularly as they sit just two points above the relegation zone. But with a £7.5million release clause in his contract and Arsenal sniffing around his signature, the former West Ham United ace all but admits his time on Tyneside could be coming to a close.

"It is true that Arsenal are among the clubs that are tempting," he said. "Journalists are doing their job, they know Arsenal need strikers and they know I have a clause in my contract so they start speculating."
