Benitez will resist option to reintroduce Lukaku to Chelsea ranks

Romelu Lukaku will see the season out at West Bromwich Albion.

The Belgium international was a big-money signing for Chelsea last summer, but he failed to find the back of the net in eight Premier League appearances. In order to allow him to gain more first team experience in the top-flight, Roberto Di Matteo loaned him out to the Baggies at the start of the new campaign.

Lukaku has found his form during his short time in the Midlands, with five goals and one assist to his name in 13 outings. And as the Blues continue to struggle in front of goal, it has been suggested that Benitez, who was installed as interim coach last month, will take the 19-year-old back when the transfer window reopens.

However, the Spanish coach has now confirmed that the former Anderlecht striker will remain at the Hawthorns as planned, despite the wretched form of Fernando Torres, who has scored just one goal in his last 11 appearances.

"We know Romelu has been doing very well for West Bromwich Albion," he former Liverpool boss told The Sun. "But it's maybe best for him to stay there where he is playing games for now, as it will be better for his future development."

This makes it even more likely that the European champions will sign attacking reinforcements when the window reopens. However, one potential target who is off the agenda is German international Andre Schurrle, whose father has now confirmed will remain at Bayer Leverkusen at least until the end of the season.
