£12million Giroud reveals his Arsenal target as critics retreat

Olivier Giroud wants to score at least 12 league goals for Arsenal.

Having lost Robin van Persie to Manchester United in the summer, Arsene Wenger spent around £12million to lure his French compatriot from Montpellier. Giroud arrived in England with something of a reputation, having last season scored 21 goals as he helped his side win the title for the first time in their history.

The 26-year-old, though, found his early days in England an altogether different challenge, as he failed to net in his first six Premier League outings. However, he has since found his feet, and he now has three goals as well as scoring once in the UEFA Champions League and twice in the League Cup, to take his overall tally to six.

Giroud is eager to keep proving his doubters wrong throughout the season, which would certainly go some way to easing the pressure off Wenger. And the France international hopes to score at least another nine goals in the league, having revealed that he is now feeling much better about his new surroundings.

"I'm starting to quieten the doubters a bit,” he said. “I'm feeling better and better in this team and I think you can see it. Last year, I scored 21 goals in the league (for Montpellier) and only one of them was with my head, but it's true that I'm getting a lot more crosses here.

"I'm trying to build an understanding with my new team-mates and we are getting to know each other more and more. I'd be happy to get between 12 and 15 goals in the league this season. I am confident about my qualities. I never give up. When I didn't score at the beginning of the season, I stayed confident, and I always work on my mind and my game. So it's not a surprise for me.”
