All hail Fiorentina: the best footballing side in Serie A?

Are Fiorentina the best footballing side in Italy?

The Viola finished in 13th position last season, but have started this campaign in impressive form. After just seven matches, they are sixth place in the table, having collected 11 points from three wins and two draws.

Former Italy international Vincenzo Montella, who succeeded Vincenzo Guerini during the summer, brought in a staggering 18 players ahead of the new season, and some of these are already proving to be inspirational additions: goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano, defenders Facundo Roncaglia and Juan Cuadrado and midfielder Borja Valero have started every game.

And there is also the likes of midfielder Alberto Aquilani and strike duo Luca Toni and Mounir El Hamdaoui, who have yet to find their stride but offer much promise. And then, of course, is the icing on the cake in 21-year-old Montenegro international Stevan Jovetic, who has already scored five times.

Next up for Montella’s men is a trip to the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi to take on Chievo, who finished in 10th spot last season but have this term started with five defeats from their seven outings. Viola are clear favourites, then, and Gialloblu coach Eugenio Corini believes his players have the task of facing the best footballing team in the country.

“We have to try and stop Fiorentina,” the 42-year-old told Radio Toscana. “Because at the moment, they are playing the best football in Italy. To win, we have to think of our own game first, and then theirs.”
