Sunderland could thwart Stoke City’s Owen bid

Sunderland have made contact with Michael Owen.

The former England international is available on a free transfer this summer, having left Manchester United upon the expiry of his contract. The 32-year-old insists he can still do a job in the Premier League, but finding a new club has proven harder than expected.

Tony Pulis has made no secret of his admiration for the former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle United striker, and an offer is said to be on the table. However, as Owen weighs this up, he also appears to have an option from Wearside.

According to reports, Martin O’Neill has approached him with an offer to move to the Stadium of Light, as he looks to bolster his Black Cats options. Owen is expected to make a final decision on his next move in the coming days.
