Skrtel rules out Manchester City

Martin Skrtel has ruled out a move to Manchester City by signing a new deal at Liverpool.

Roberto Mancini has been linked with the Slovakian international for much of the summer, as the City coach looks to bolster his back four ahead of the 31 August deadline. However, he will now have to look elsewhere for reinforcements after the 27-year-old signed a new deal at Anfield, which is designed to keep him on Merseyside for the long-term.

"I'm happy because I am a part of one of the biggest clubs in the world," Skrtel told the club's official website. "After last season there was a lot of talk about my future but I have to say that the first priority for me was always to sign a new deal with Liverpool.

"For me it's a great thing to play for Liverpool. I am proud to play for Liverpool with these great players - probably some of the best players in the world. I hope I can create history at this club and that the fans will always remember me - that's my target for the future."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will no doubt be pleased that Skrtel has committed his future to the Reds, but Mancini could still be in touch before next week’s deadline. Having failed with two bids for Daniel Agger, the Italian is expected to make a fresh move for the Denmark international in the coming days.
