RVP only wanted United move

Sir Alex Ferguson insists Robin van Persie was only interested in joining Manchester United.

The Holland international was in the final 12 months of his contract at Arsenal this summer, and was always likely to be sold when he announced he had no intention of extending this deal. Arsene Wenger was reluctant to sell to a Premier League rival, and had hoped for interest from the likes of Juventus and Paris St Germain.

However, on Thursday United had an offer of £20million accepted for van Persie, a fee which has the potential to rise to £24million. Reds boss Ferguson is naturally delighted to land the 29-year-old, and has expressed his opinion that the striker was only ever interested in linking up with Wayne Rooney et al at Old Trafford.

"The boy wanted to come. He turned down various clubs,” he told MUTV. "If he hadn't told Arsenal that he e wanted to go to Manchester United, the transfer wouldn't have happened."

Van Persie is now in line to make his debut for United on Monday night, when they travel to Goodison Park to open their season against Everton.
