Rodwell thrilled with City switch

Jack Rodwell can’t hide his delight at clinching a move to Manchester City.

The 21-year-old had in the past been linked with a move to Manchester United, but he joined their rivals in a surprise £15million deal on Sunday afternoon. It was a move which came out of the blue, and came just days after City coach Roberto Mancini expressed his frustration at a lack of transfer movement at the Etihad Stadium this summer.

Rodwell, who had seen his progress at Everton blighted by injury of late, is now in line to make his debut for the champions on Sunday, when he is expected to fill in for Gareth Barry in the Premier League opener against Southampton. And the England international is looking forward to helping his new side retain their league title.

"I relish the opportunity of playing with some of the best players in the world and continuing my development," said Rodwell. "It will be an amazing experience to make my debut in front of them if I am selected to play next weekend. The hard work starts today as I start to help contribute to the club winning more silverware.”

City, who also won the FA Cup in 2011, have already started to add to their honours list this season, after they beat Chelsea 3-2 in the Community Shield on Sunday. Yaya Toure, Carlos Tevez and Samir Nasri scored the goals for Mancini’s men at Villa Park.
