Podolski sets sights on Sunderland

Lukas Podolski hopes to feature against Sunderland on the opening day of the season.

The German international clinched a £12million move to Arsenal earlier this summer, but he has yet to appear for his new club as he recovers from his exploits at Euro 2012. Podolski could, though, make his first outing for the Gunners at the weekend, when they take on, of all clubs, his former employers Cologne in his homeland.

Looking further ahead, the 27-year-old has set his sights on the opening day of the new campaign, when Arsene Wenger’s side play host to Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland. And he insists that whilst he is not yet up to speed with his fitness, he will be raring to go when the Black Cats take to the Emirates Stadium a week tomorrow.

"I need some more weeks and then you will see the real Podolski,” he told the official club website. "It has been very good so far. This is a big club with a great coach and I am very proud to be an Arsenal player. I am looking forward to the first match of the season against Sunderland.”
